A System Under Strain: Navigating Funding Challenges for Greensboro’s Homelessness Services
At the Greensboro Housing Coalition (GHC), our mission is to ensure every neighbor has a safe and stable home. However, as winter temperatures drop, the local network of support services is facing an unprecedented strain. A recent report from FOX8 highlights a sobering reality: funding challenges are forcing essential nonprofits to scale back or shut down just when our community needs them most.
The Impact of a Funding Gap
The Guilford County Continuum of Care—the HUD-designed system that coordinates our local response to homelessness—is currently struggling with a significant resource deficit. Because many homelessness services rely on grant-based funding that operates on a reimbursement model, organizations often have to spend money upfront that they simply don’t have.
This has led to several critical losses in our community’s safety net:
- Shelter Closures: In January, the Shirley T. Frye YWCA of Greensboro was forced to close its emergency family shelter—one of only two such facilities in the county.
- Organizational Shifting: Partners Ending Homelessness shut down in December, requiring other nonprofits, like Fox Valley Farms, to step in and manage the county’s coordinated entry phone lines.
Increased Demand in Freezing Weather
As the temperatures hit freezing levels, the demand for housing assistance is rising. We are seeing an influx of families fleeing domestic violence and individuals who have fallen victim to unfortunate circumstances—like “phantom” landlords who collect rent for properties they don’t own, leaving tenants on the street through no fault of their own.
Greensboro’s Resilience
Despite these challenges, Greensboro continues to fight for its residents. Ongoing efforts like the Community Safety Department’s Homeless Services Team and The Doorway Project (now located at Pomona Park) provide critical bridges to safety. However, pallet shelters and temporary teams are not a substitute for a fully funded, permanent housing infrastructure.
How You Can Support the Continuum of Care
Resolving the housing crisis in Guilford County requires more than just government grants; it requires a united front from business owners, corporate partners, and individual donors.
The Guilford County Continuum of Care has established a dedicated fund to support the nonprofits on the front lines. You can help by:
- Contributing Directly: A PayPal link has been set up to collect and distribute funds to local organizations.
- Advocating for Funding: Urge city and county leaders to prioritize flexible, upfront funding for homelessness services.
- Supporting GHC: Your donations to GHC allow us to continue the advocacy and case management work that prevents families from entering this strained system in the first place.
