Homeless/Rental Counseling
At GHC, our HUD-Certified Housing Counselors offer free housing counseling services dedicate
to assisting those experiencing chronic homelessness or struggling to maintain and improve
their current living situation. Our Homeless/Rental Counseling Team works with you to locate
affordable or supportive housing options tailored to fit your needs, providing a lifeline during
tough times.
GHC services provided:
- Housing Hotline
- A real-time assistance telephone line and monitored email to respond promptly to general, urgent and emergency housing issues
- Triage and connect callers to appropriate services or referrals based on their situation.
- Housing Counseling
- Perform Intake services to determine the overall scope of housing needs
- Offer personalized counseling for housing-related topics and questions
- Housing Searches
- Conduct and provide personalized housing searches based on client preferences
- Shelter Information
- Provide clients with listings and contact information of existing emergency shelters
- ETAP (Emergency Tenant Assistance Program)
- Support transition to ‘new’ housing for tenants facing displacement (e.g., due to fire, condemnation, or unsafe conditions); with relocation guidance
- Education & Referrals
- Provide education on tenant and landlord rights, housing resources, and the evictions process
- Connect individuals to legal aid, partner and community organizations and rent/utility assistance, if available
- Refer clients to available housing opportunities (e.g., Partnership Village)

Healthy Homes
Is your home sick? Everyone deserves a home that’s healthy, safe, and supports their well-being
for all in the household. At GHC, our Healthy Homes Team is committed to helping residents
address health and safety hazards in their living environments.
GHC services provided:
- Home Assessments & Inspections
- Overall HQS Home Inspection
- HUD-certified for all systems in the home
- Rental Lease Review
- Offer a review of the tenant’s lease based on topics raised by the tenant
- Landlord/Tenant Mediation
- Mediation with landlords, property managers, and/or maintenance personnel to resolve tenant issues
- Partner with Community/Government Organizations for Action
- Leverage relationships with neighborhood organizations, the City of Greensboro, Guilford County, and Legal Aid to assist with resolving our clients housing needs
- Green Cleaning Kits
- Source, create, and distribute healthy cleaning kits for use by our Intake clients in need
- Provide instructions and recipes for using the products included in the ‘Green Cleaning Kits’
- Education & Workshops
- Provide education and workshops to promote and healthy housekeeping and “Green Cleaning”

Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention
Many homeowners in Greensboro are on the brink of losing their home to foreclosure due to
financial instability and unforeseen circumstances. A GHC HUD-Certified Housing Counselor is
prepared and committed to assist Greensboro residents with preventing mortgage foreclosure
so you can stay in your home and retain the asset for you and your family.
GHC services provided:
- Financial Counseling
- Perform an Intake to assess our clients overall financial condition and offer options
- Homeowner/Lender Advocacy
- Advocate, communicate, and negotiate with lenders or mortgage servicers
- Help clients understand foreclosure notices and connect them to assistance
- Loan Modification Review
- Review options such as loan modifications, repayment plans, and forbearance to avoid foreclosure
- Budgeting
- Offer assistance with budgeting, credit building, avoiding scams, and preparing for homeownership
- Provide tools and resources to help clients understand financial responsibilities of renting/owning a home
- Disaster/Emergency Preparedness Planning
- Help clients prepare for emergencies and bring awareness to available community-based opportunities when disasters strike

Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention counseling is by appointment only by calling the Housing
Hotline at 336.691.9521. Walk-ins will be scheduled for an appointment.
Community Engagement
Real, lasting change requires collective action and a united voice. The Community Engagement
Team at GHC is actively engaged in community outreach and advocacy to address systemic
issues that impact our neighborhoods and make attaining and retaining a home more
challenging.

- Neighborhood Engagement & Activation
- Partner with local groups to solve housing issues in their neighborhoods
- Assist communities in responding to mass displacement and housing emergencies
- Partnerships & Collaborations
- Support initiatives such as Collaborative Cottage Grove and Bingham Park Environmental Justice Team
- Advocacy/Speaker Series
- Developing NEW workshops designed to highlight relevant housing topics using internal and external speakers
- Create spaces for learning, networking, and planning better housing solutions (e.g. Build partnerships with residents, service providers, and other organizations)
- Housing & Non-Housing Resource Referrals
- Share housing resources at community events
- Share available resources and events on other household needs such as food, clothing, supplies, etc.
- Canvassing & Tabling
- Connect with canvassing, tabling to engage with clients and prospective clients at community events
- Community Workshops
- Partner with neighborhoods and communities to sponsor housing and community building events and activities
