Supporting Our Neighbors: An Update on “The District” Displacements & Media Coverage

At the Greensboro Housing Coalition (GHC), we believe that every resident deserves a safe, stable place to call home. When that stability is threatened by unsafe living conditions and sudden displacement, our mission to advocate for and support our community becomes more critical than ever.

We are currently working closely with the City of Greensboro to provide ongoing support for the residents displaced from the apartment complex known as “The District” at 830 W. Market Street.

The Situation at 830 W. Market Street

The displacement followed serious safety concerns regarding the building’s infrastructure. On December 23, the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors revoked the license of the contractor working on the building’s electrical system and canceled all associated permits.

Currently, a “stop work” order remains in effect. Before power can be restored and residents can safely return, the building owner must submit professional plans for approval and secure new permits. Until these safety standards are met, the building remains uninhabitable.

Ongoing Support and Resources

We know that being forced from your home is a traumatic and disruptive experience. GHC and the City are committed to ensuring no one is left without options during this transition.

  • Temporary Housing: The City is utilizing its displaced resident fund to provide hotel stays for eligible residents through January 31, 2026.
  • Financial Assistance: Displaced residents may be eligible for up to $1,000 in assistance to cover moving expenses, security deposits, or other related costs.
  • CRITICAL DEADLINE: All applications for this financial assistance must be submitted by January 31, 2026.
