GHC Newsletter, June 27, 2019

Sep 18, 2019 | All Categories, News & Media

You’ve probably seen the recent news.

A local substance abuse recovery agency is being investigated for atrocious housing conditions and the overall extremely poor treatment of people enrolled in their program.

The news broke about two weeks ago. That day, the program unexpectedly cut the power to two apartment buildings housing 35 people – some of which were children. Residents contacted the Greensboro Housing Coalition.

When I got there, a number of residents stood out front of the buildings, the exteriors of which were in rough shape. Several residents let us into their units. Those conditions were substandard at best. I also learned that residents were not allowed to have keys to their apartments.

Absolutely no program should treat people like this.

 ……….

Currently, GHC is working with these displaced residents to assist them in their transition to permanent housing – housing that is both safe and decent. In the meantime, we have organized temporary housing for the families.

An investigation into the entities involved in providing the housing, mental health, and substance abuse treatment to these individuals has been initiated and is actively underway.

Donate money to the Greensboro Housing Coalition. The fact is, we need donor support to keep on top of emergencies as they happen. Every day, there are people in our community in desperate need of help, and they don’t usually make a media splash. Your support helps us provide services to people in crisis before it hits the news, if it hits the news. Click here to donate.

We have and will continue to refer those with complaints about the medical side of this situation to the appropriate parties, including our legal partners if relevant. The Interactive Resource Center, which opened up its doors as an emergency shelter for these families the night of the cut power, the City of Greensboro, and Legal Aid have all been vital partners in this response efforts.

Because of the volume of contacts that our offices have received, we are most concerned about an emerging humanitarian crisis in our community.  We believe that there are many more very vulnerable residents who are at immediate risk of homelessness as this story progresses.

The Greensboro Housing Coalition will continue to focus on helping families and at risk individuals affected so that they are able to move on with their lives.
